Desks are both functional and important design elements. If you want your home to look like it came out of a magazine—yet still need a place to get some work done—you can spend hours browsing local furniture showrooms in Venice, FL to find the ideal desk for your tips. Here’s what to do before making your purchase:

  • Decide on your budget: First, consider how much you’re willing to spend. If it’s a desk that you’ll be using all the time, you’ll probably want to spend more to get something just right. If it’s for more ornamental purposes, you can get away with spending less.
  • Measure your space: Next, measure your office space or whatever room your desk will be in and think about your ideal layout. Dimensions make a difference—you’ll need a piece that can fit in your existing space and coordinate with the furniture you already have.
  • Think about styles: Finally, consider the styles that will work with your décor. Whether minimalist, modern or traditional, there’s a desk for everyone.

Finding a desk that delivers

After you’ve decided on the basics, you’ll need to decide what you want out of your desk. For example, many people now have an ornamental rather than a functional office.  If that sounds like you, we recommend a “writing” desk.  They’re usually finished on both the front and back, so you can “float” it in a room.  They offer good surface space for writing, but very little drawer space—this is a form-over-function type of furniture. Accessorize it with a globe, brass lamp, antique ink wells, tray and letter opener and other accoutrements that complement your room.

For a functional office, however, you need a functional desk. The center drawer may have hinges on either side, so the face of the drawer flips down, the drawer slides out and you can store or use a laptop. These desks normally offer a pencil drawer and one to two file drawers. They’re usually unfinished on the back, so this type of desk is best placed against a wall.

Basic desk types

Depending on what you need your desk for, there are several basic styles to choose from. You already know about writing desks for ornamental offices. When it comes to function, you might want to try a desk with a hutch, a corner desk or an executive desk.

Desks with hutches or corner configurations offer a lot more storage than writing desks. Hutches usually include additional shelves and drawers above and below the desk space. Corner desks are usually L-shaped, with plenty of drawers and a keyboard platform below the desk space. Finally, executive desks are like writing desks with drawers underneath the face and on either side. They may be finished on the back so you can put them between you and your visitors.
